In the AI-driven world, digital safety is being rebuilt as fast as platforms scale and threats evolve.

The Safer Internet India Summit 2026 focused on how the public sector, technology companies and leaders across industries are starting to respond to this environment in real time.

“What stood out immediately was the multi-stakeholder nature of the summit — the recognition that online safety is not owned by any one entity, but instead sits at the intersection of policy, platform design, enforcement, education and human behavior,” says Sonali Sardana, Director, Wellness and Resiliency Director at TaskUs who attended the summit along with Jasmine Tahir, Senior Manager, Wellness and Resiliency.

Across sessions, a recurring theme emerged: prevention must be systemic, coordinated and human-centred, not reactive or fragmented.

A collective challenge  

This type of unified approach is the only way to solve the collective challenge and maintain user confidence, which has turned into a constant, active requirement rather than a one-time setup.

Jasmine explains, “A particularly resonant insight was the idea that trust in the digital ecosystem is no longer implicit. It must be continuously earned and intentionally designed.” 

This shift is increasingly urgent because, as risk (e.g., social engineering attacks, fraud and abuse) expands across user segments, the price of hesitation is steepening. “As online spaces become more embedded in everyday life — especially for children, adolescents and first-time internet users — the cost of inaction or delayed response grows exponentially,” she says. 

Adding prevention from the start

Building that trust starts with a move toward proactive defense. “One of the panel discussions reinforced the importance of early detection, information-sharing and public awareness in reducing harm before it escalates,” says Sonali. 

That evolution is also changing how users themselves are being equipped to navigate the web. 

“What stood out was the shift from fear-based messaging to capacity-building and digital literacy,” Jasmine notes, “The panel underscored that children and adolescents need more than restrictions. They need age-appropriate guidance, trusted adults and platforms that are designed with safety defaults.” 

Protecting the protectors

This push for earlier intervention is forcing safety out of the silo and into the very fabric of the technology. Sonali explains, “Another key takeaway of the day was that trust cannot be retrofitted. It must be embedded into product design, policy decisions, enforcement workflows and user experience.”

As these systems become more complex, there’s more pressure on the human systems running them behind the scenes — and a greater need for workplace mental health programs.

“What I found particularly meaningful was the acknowledgment that platform safety teams themselves operate under significant cognitive and emotional load, especially those involved in moderation, enforcement and response,” says Jasmine. “While policy and design are critical, it’s also important to create sustainable operating models that protect both users and the people safeguarding platforms.” 

Responding to young users new behavior

The move toward sustainable safety models is also forcing a rethink of how platforms interact with their youngest users. “A powerful insight that came to light is that today’s teens are not passive consumers of technology. They are active negotiators of digital identity, agency and boundaries,” says Jasmine. 

This behavior requires a different approach to protection, especially in the context of AI-driven amplification, algorithmic bias and the psychological impact of always-on digital environments. 

According to Sonali, “Safety, therefore, cannot be imposed purely through controls; it must be
co-created with young people, respecting their need for autonomy while ensuring guardrails are
in place.” 

Converging operations and policy

Moving from the autonomy of the individual to the responsibility of the institution, the conversation shifted toward how people’s needs are translated into law.

“A key reflection here was that policy must keep pace with technology without losing sight of human consequences — especially for vulnerable populations,” says Sonali. 

However, the attendees observed that intent does not always equal impact. Jasmine points out that without the right people in the room, execution gaps remain, saying, “The absence of broader BPO participation meant that frontline operational insights — particularly around workforce sustainability, delivery complexity and human impact — were less visible in the overall dialogue.”  

Getting ahead of what’s next

Despite the operational gaps, the day’s discussions pointed toward a deeper shift in how digital security is defined. Jasmine reflected, “Attending the Safer Internet India Summit reinforced a fundamental belief: digital safety is not just a technical or regulatory challenge; it is a human one.” 

But, this human-centered approach dictates a new roadmap for the industry. For Sonali the event was a call to move beyond the “patchwork” mentality of the past. She notes, “For me, the most powerful takeaway was the reminder that prevention, trust and care must be built into the system, not added after harm occurs.” 

The shift is already underway.
