Every day, content moderators review thousands of potentially harmful user generated content, including graphic violence and hate speech, to keep digital spaces safe. This high-pressure environment carries a heavy mental toll. Without the right support, frontline teams can experience serious long-term issues like burnout, depression and secondary trauma.

To shed light on these challenges, TaskUs’ Division of Research co-authored the paper, “The Psychological Well-Being of Content Moderators.” The paper explores how businesses can better shield the digital frontline. Moderators perform intense emotional labor that requires specialized mental health care and proactive interventions.

Our researchers recommend a multi-layered approach to well-being that includes: leveraging technology to limit content exposure and reduce cognitive load, providing clinical support and science-based wellness programs, as well as allowing downtime from moderation tasks.
